Jeanni Nishi joined Second Life in February, 2007 and quickly became fascinated with the virtual kinetic art of artists such as Rezago Kokorin, Elros Tuominen, Sunn Thunders and Juria Yoshikawa. "Jeanni Nishi" is her Second Life avatar name. She prefers to keep her Second Life separate from her real life. In Second Life, Jeanni Nishi is a sculptor, builder, photographer, and, as of January 2008, a mentor.

In Second Life, Jeanni maintains Konnichiwa Park, a small wintry park in Blekinge, adjacent to Blekinge Sculpture Park, an early source of inspiration to her. She displays her own virtual sculptures in her park.

On Art in SL

"For those who wonder why one should put one's efforts into creating virtual art rather than "real" art, I suggest that art in Second Life is no different than any other artistic medium that requires a machine to play it. A movie cannot be seen without a machine, and most music is experienced using various machines. What is real is whether the art touches you, not whether you can touch the art."

SL Sculptures

Jeanni Nishi is a minor sculpture artist on Second Life, albeit enthusiastic. She is fascinated with Second Life as a medium. The combination of manipulable prims (the building blocks of the Second Life world) with the capabilities involved in scripting the movement of the textures applied to the pieces, scripted moving of the pieces themselves, the inclusion of particle effects, changing the transparency and interactivity of the prims, making the pieces reactive to avatar presence, and adding animation of avatars into the experience of the sculpture-- all these possibilities interest her mightily. Her sculptures reflect her experiments with combining some, or all, of these. She is both serious about Second Life sculptures as a legitimate art form, and playful in her approach to sculpture.

SL Photography

Jeanni Nishi also enjoys making and manipulating digital photographs of Second Life scenes and people. These images are displayed on Flickr. Among her favorite places to take photographs is The Far Away build by AM Radio, a wonderful wheatfield with beautiful and fanciful objects. She is also inspired by Second Life photographers who show their work on Flickr, including Nur Moo, Skycat Ranger, Hio Taringa, and ColeMarie Soleil.

Exhibitions

  • The Real Me: a group show at Oberon Onmura's Man-a-hatta Gallery in which artists made sculptural representations of themselves. The show included Jeanni Nishi, Oberon Onmura, Bryn Oh, Misprint Thursday, and many others. http://slartmagazine.com/realme.htm June 2008.
